Bush Studio: masterclass is a visual arts camp for students in Year 12, especially those studying Visual Arts, including related VET,  content-endorsed, board-endorsed and life skills courses. Students are given the opportunity to refine their skills in specific expressive forms as they work alongside carefully selected artists to observe, interpret and respond to their immediate environment at Ku-ring-gai National Park, Bobbin Head. 

On the first day of the program, students are invited to work alongside artist Emily Besser to discover the intersection of painting, drawing and collage.  Experiment with numerous painting and drawing mediums in order to overcome preconceptions of their scope. Create dramatic juxtapositions through varied scale, density of brushstrokes and pigment, colour and texture as you harness the possibilities of paper as a surface. 

On day 2, artist Nicole Barakat will lead students through a workshop supporting the development of new strategies for their creative practice. Using the metaphor of a garden, students are invited to engage in fun, open-ended, intuitive and experimental processes, in a supportive and safe setting.

  • NSW public school students in Year 12 who are seeking a unique opportunity to develop their visual arts practice, working intensively with artists in a unique bushland setting
  • Year 12 students studying all HSC, life skills, board-endorsed and content-endorsed courses in the area of visual arts are welcome to apply.
  • A maximum of 4 students will be accepted from the same school if capacity is exceeded. This is negotiated with teachers once applications have closed.

Acceptance process

  1. Students are required to complete this form to register their position in the Bush Studio program
  2. Ensure you check the information you submit carefully, especially your email address as this is our main form of communication with you. 
  3. Ensure ability to meet swimming requirements is indicated where applicable.
  4. Ensure parent permission is indicated for student information to be published.
  5. Once you have completed this online acceptance form, you will receive an email confirming your acceptance with a detailed information booklet. Enrolment limitations apply to multiple students from a single school.

Payment for Bush Studio will be made to the student's school on receipt of student acceptance to the camp.  Schools will be automatically debited for student participation in Bush Studio via SAP journal entry leading up to the camp dates.

Privacy notice

The information requested in this note is being collected by the NSW Department of Education. The department will use the information in connection with your student's participation in this event for the following purposes:

  2. communication with parents/carers; and
  3. for the health, safety and welfare of your student.

Important information

In the event of injury, no personal injury insurance cover is provided by the NSW Department of Education for students in relation to school sporting activities, physical education lessons or any other school activity. The department’s public liability cover is fault-based and limited to breaches by the department of its duty of care to students that may result in claims for compensation.

Parents/carers are advised to assess the level and extent of their child’s involvement in the activity when deciding whether additional insurance cover is required prior to their child’s involvement in the program. Personal accident insurance cover is available through normal retail insurance outlets.

Due to the nature of our location parents/guardians/schools are to arrange their own student transport to our school site. The National Park charges a $12 entry fee for all vehicles, although this is waived for the drop off and collection from programs at Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre.

Parent permissions and agreements

My child/guardian will be involved in a variety of activities including bush walking, canoeing, artwork, night bushwalk and outdoor activities.

I agree to my child/guardian’s attendance at this camp and to their taking part in any activities/outings arranged for the student in connection with the camp. I authorise staff to obtain medical assistance which they deem necessary should an accident occur.

In the event that my child fails to abide by the Behaviour code for students I understand that I will be notified and that they will be required to be collected or sent home at my expense.

Swimming and canoeing permission

Swimming and canoeing permission

Students will be participating in unstructured swimming activities in Cowan Creek at Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre

Unstructured swimming activities are free swimming activities supervised by teachers. Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre will provide Personal flotation devices (PFD) to students.

Prior to participation, all students nominated on this form by their family/carer as being a swimmer will have their water confidence endorsed by their school and principal. This is a requirement, as when/if students capsize, assistance may be needed to get back into the canoe or kayak. The use of a life jacket does not negate the need for the prerequisite student swim test.

Participating students must demonstrate water confidence by being able to 

  1. swim 25 metres, or 
  2. Keep themselves afloat for 30 seconds. 

Students may use any swimming stroke or combination of strokes. Schools may use results from: 

  1. Water Survival Challenge if within 12 months of assessment, or 
  2. Evidence of school swimming carnival participation.

Accident insurance information

In the event of injury, no accident or medical insurance cover is provided by the NSW Government Treasury Managed Fund for students participating in school sporting activities, physical education lessons or any other school endorsed activity, unless there is a breach of duty of care by department or school staff. The NSW Department of Education is insured to meet the financial impact of any legal liabilities arising from its activities. It does not provide, nor has it ever provided, accident or medical insurance for students enrolled in government schools.

Concussion management 

When a student enrolled in a government school is diagnosed with concussion, the principal must be advised in writing as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed. Students may only return to sport and physical activity once a medical clearance has been provided to the school and, if at a school sport event, to the supervising teacher. Any student that experiences a suspected concussion during a school-endorsed activity, will be removed from the activity and parents/carers will be advised that a medical follow-up is required. If medical clearance is not provided, the student cannot participate in vigorous or competitive school sport or physical activities for 21 days from the concussion date. Please advise the Bush Studio program coordinator.

Raw footage will be stored on NSW Department of Education servers, accessible by The Arts Unit staff. After editing, the finished or produced media will be published on the Department of Education's social media channels and websites and accessible to the public. Footage may also be shared and accessed by media outlets.
 

How long can the footage be used for?

The footage will be available until the department considers it no longer fit for purpose.
 
The footage online may be cached on web browsers, and archived copies may appear after the department ceases to post it.

Acknowledgements and consents

Filming/recording: I consent to the department filming me and recording my voice, performances, poses, and actions in connection with the project described above.
Re-records: if any re-recording or voice-overs are needed, I agree to make myself available to assist.

Video editing: I understand that the department may edit any video it records, including combining it with other video and audio and adding text or music for the project
Inspection: I waive any right to inspect or approve any use of the footage before it is used.
Copyright: I acknowledge and agree that all rights in and to any content captured as a part of the project, including the copyright, are and shall remain the sole property of the department and I waive any moral rights under the Copyright Act 1968 in the video and audio.
Voluntary: I understand that participation in the filming and recording is voluntary and I will not be remunerated.
Online reposts: if the footage is posted by the department on the internet the department cannot prevent third parties from posting links.
Interpretation: references in this Acknowledgment to 'me' and 'I' are references to the person recorded in the 'student details' section of this form.
