In this workshop, students will explore contemporary South Asian dance, movement and culture. These energetic and engaging workshops are run by South Asian dance tutors in collaboration with the NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit.

Students will have the opportunity to celebrate their cultural identity, connect with others and develop their confidence and creativity through dance.

• Participation in the South Asian Dance Workshops is $35.00 per student.

About Kathryn Fisher

Dance educator and choreographer

Kathryn Fisher is a highly experienced NSW public school dance educator with over 22 years of teaching experience, including extensive work across Years 7–12 and at HSC level. She has led school dance ensembles and supported students through choreography, performance and public presentations.

Kathryn has choreographed for Schools Spectacular and State Dance Festival items for many years and has been the choreographer for numerous musical theatre productions, including Beauty and the Beast, High School Musical, My Fair Lady and The Boy from Oz. Her professional practice reflects a deep understanding of dance as an art form and the compositional processes underpinning effective choreography.

Kathryn is passionate about supporting and mentoring teachers, with a strong commitment to developing educators as confident choreographic role models for their students. Her workshops focus on unpacking the dance syllabus in relation to choreography, exploring the elements of composition, and providing practical, accessible approaches that teachers can confidently take back into their classrooms.

This practical composition based professional learning includes:

1. exploring the dance syllabus to inform choreographic practice
2. analysing successful performance works
3. participating in practical tasks that spark creative approaches to choreography
4. planning effective teaching and learning strategies
5. discussing how production elements can elevate performance.
