Firebird Forensics - collaborative project assessment
Dance

Aim

Collaborate, choreograph and perform a dance work that responds to Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1919). As well as present a comparative report on Stravinsky’s and your own socio-historical context.

This assessment will be in two parts.

Part one - collaborative composition

Present a collaborative dance work devised through problem-solving tasks and manipulation of the elements of dance. You will explore, devise, select, refine and structure movement in response to the Infernal Dance of King Kastchei from The Firebird Suite by Stravinsky.

You will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the compositional process through performance, oral and written tasks. Throughout this unit, you will be given individual and group choreographic tasks to construct the dance work.

Part two: socio-historical research task

Research the socio-historical context of Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971), and compare his context to your own.

Research what was happening in the cities that Stravinsky lived in, what was happening in the world during his lifetime, and what was happening in his personal life that influenced his creative endeavours. Compare this with your own experiences and the state of the world today to explore what affects you creatively. What are the similarities and differences in the two contexts, and how have they impacted the artistic expression of the individual?
