State Wind Bands - Teacher professional learning expression of interest

Applications for 2023 are now open.


Please note that the 2023 State Wind Bands will commence under the guidelines from NSW Health and the Department of Education.  


Teachers are invited to apply for professional learning during State Wind Band which will be held in Sydney.

  • Teachers who have an instrumental ensemble in their school should apply.
  • Teachers will receive experience in conducting an ensemble and structuring a rehearsal to receive musical outcomes.
  • Teachers who are accepted for this program will nominate for either Junior or Senior Wind Band program.

Please note all applicants for child-related programs must have a current Working with Children Check Number.

Dates

If selected teachers must be available for all of the following program dates.  

  • For Senior Wind Band, a minimum of Grade 5 or equivalent is required.
    They participate in workshops at The Arts Unit Lewisham, Saturday 12 - Sunday 13 August and perform at The Sydney Opera House Monday 14 - Tuesday 15 August.
     
  • For Junior Wind Band, a minimum of Grade 3 or equivalent is required.
    They participate in workshops at The Arts Unit Lewisham, Saturday 16 - Sunday 17 September and perform at The Sydney Opera House Monday 18 - Tuesday 19 September.

  • Sydney Opera House

Costs

  • Casual teacher relief costs will be provided to schools to support teacher’s participation in this professional learning opportunity.
  • Accommodation will be covered for teachers accepted from rural and remote areas.

Applications will close Monday 29 May 2023. 


Professional learning outcomes 

There are 3 key outcomes that will be covered through the teaching mentor program. 

  1. Improve proficiency in planning and conducting successful rehearsals and increase knowledge to lead ensembles to a higher standard.
  2. Enhance knowledge of higher level conducting techniques as appropriate to performance. through an understanding of technique and style 
  3. Develop conducting skills through practical experience in sectional or full ensemble rehearsals.

Evaluation

As part of participation in this professional learning, teachers will be required to engage in a thorough evaluation process.

These will be conducted by online surveys prior, during and after the program. Further details provided to successful applicants.

  • Conductors will work with Steve Williams during rehearsals and conduct one of the ensembles for one of their performances in the Opera House.
  • Assistant staff members will work with Steve Williams in rehearsal tutoring the students and having discussions on best practice for implementing and sustaining an ensemble in your school.
