[raining]

COL PHELPS: 1947. The air smelled like chalk and broken promises. I was supposed to be clocking in for a truancy patrol. Instead, I find a dead body bleeding into the floor. Another name crossed off roll call permanently. I needed to figure this out fast.

[jazz film noir music]

I've seen enough dead kids to know their soul's been evicted. This was no accident. This was deliberate.

Hm, hair clip. There's only one person.

[suspenseful music]

[booming]

CHARLIE 'THE MINK': Every man has got his price to pay. The question is, do you want to pay yours in cash or pain?

HAROLD 'THE SUPERMAN': I don't know nothing. I didn't see nothing. I don't say nothing.

CHARLIE 'THE MINK': Want to stick to your story? Because the boss don't like loose ends. So start talking.

HAROLD 'THE SUPERMAN': Oh!

[suspenseful music intensifies]

COL PHELPS: I feel sorry for the bloke. I knew he wasn't our man. I was just covering my bases. But the interview made him crack. Not everything goes like in the movies, huh?

Miss Molly, lately, you've been seen near every suspect and body that's happened over the past few weeks. Care to explain why?

[jazz film noir music]

MOLLY: I'm no killer, detective. I just happen to be in the wrong place too many times.

[suspenseful music]

COL PHELPS: Or the right place at the right time. Looks like you have got murder on your timetable.

[sighs] Tell it to the judge.

Listen here. I will make sure that you are put in prison for a very long time.

MOLLY: You've got no proof!

COL PHELPS: I knew I had to walk away. This dame had a hold on me. And I didn't want her to see me crack. Little did I know, I wasn't going to see her again.

MARIA VAN DIME: If it wasn't her, who's left?

COL PHELPS: How did I miss this? There's only one guy who could have done this, the one that never talks straight, the one that never misses a beat, Charlie 'The Mink'.

Turns out the Femme was just a smokescreen, a red herring with good hair. The real guilt was hiding in plain sight in the eyes of a henchman.

My name is Detective Col Phelps, and I won't stop until my duty is done.

[suspenseful crescendo]

[smooth jazz music]
