[introspective music playing]

[typing, rain pattering]

[children chattering]

BROTHER: Mum, we're going for a walk. Bye.

[gentle guitar music playing]

NEWSREADER: A severe weather warning has been issued for the Northern Rivers.

[thunder rumbling]

SISTER: I'm scared. I'm really scared.

BROTHER: We need to go.

[thunder rumbling, lightning crackling]

[rain hissing]

SISTER: It's getting bad. I wonder what the creek is doing.

BROTHER: Let's go see.

SISTER: Wow, that is extremely high. We should go back now.

[thunder rumbling]

BROTHER: Hey!

JEMIMA: My sister, um, I didn't get to see her for ages. I really missed her. That was really hard for me, and I was-- I didn't really know what was going to happen. I had already lost someone in my family before the flood, so I didn't want to lose her either. And I was very scared.

I'm so grateful that my mum's friend saved her. That was probably one of the hardest things-- that I was scared I was going to lose in the flood, my sister.

FIDEL: My bedroom had a leak in the roof, so every day when I woke up, my clothes were soaked or my bed. So I had to put my books in a safe space.

REX: A lot of the mountain actually collapsed on the driveway, so it was, like, all mud and we couldn't get out. I actually tried to go with my dad, but then I remember sinking in the mud and then needing my mum to help me.

ZIA: A helicopter picked me and my mum and my sister up. I feel lucky that me and my family members and most of my friends were safe.

JASMINE: I just remember my mum and my neighbour went to go to my other neighbour's house because they couldn't-- like, they couldn't call them or anything and they wanted to make sure they were OK. They saw a little bit of the top house being like-- like, the top of the house just over ground.

Well, I'm just feeling sad and, I don't know, I'm just starting to really miss my old house.

FERNE: Once the water went all the way down on the road, so we could-- me and my mum could drive back into town, it was very different than the last time I saw Mullumbimby. There was just mud everywhere. None of the shops were open. There was people cleaning everywhere, and it was just really messy.

MARLEY: I remember the bridge being gone. And yeah, it was just a massive walk. And part of the road just got washed away. I kinda liked the flood because the community came together.

JASMINE: We made this film to share our story and tell other kids that they are not alone.

[guitar strumming]

KIDS: (singing) We're the kids of Wilsons Creek
