Festival of Instrumental Music – recorder and piano soloists application form 2024

To nominate, complete this soloist application by Friday 3 May 2024.

In 2024 we will feature a descant recorder soloist in both Psalm 100 and In the Serpentine Mine – the same player for both items; a sopranino soloist for In the Serpentine Mine; a treble soloist for In the Serpentine Mine; and a piano soloist in Concertino Bianco.

The soloists for each concert will be selected following an audition procedure and should be high standard and confident performers.

• Both metropolitan and country applicants must submit an audition by YouTube link. Please note that all applicants will be required to present the solo audition/s from memory.
• Applicants may also be invited to play the solo during the combined recorder preliminary rehearsals, but this is not a guarantee that they will be chosen for the position.
• Separate applications must be submitted if a student wishes to apply for more than one instrument.

For students auditioning for the piano solo in Concertino Bianco:

• Students should prepare either Piano performance A (PDF 141.42 KB) or Piano performance B (PDF 131.97 KB) parts. They are almost identical, but Piano performance B has been modified for those with smaller hand spans. The school version is for in-school performances only and should not be presented for audition.
• Students should present their audition from memory and with the backing track version which does not include a pre-recorded piano part. They should ensure that their part can be clearly heard above the backing track in the ensemble sections.
• Students should have the camera side on to the piano with their right hand closest to the camera and with both hands clearly visible.
• There are no pedal markings; however, students should make sensitive use of the damper pedal, especially in the slow movement.
• Students will be assessed on their technical and musical capabilities as well as their ensemble skills.
