About the group
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Advisory Group was established in March 2024, following a meeting of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This dedicated advisory group works collaboratively with The Arts Unit to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are meaningfully integrated into all aspects of our work.
The group plays a vital role in:
- providing guidance on events and programs
- contributing to policy development
- ensuring cultural safety and inclusion
- advising on implementation strategies.
Through this student-led initiative, we strengthen our commitment to embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across The Arts Unit's activities. The advisory group ensures that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices are central to our decision-making processes.

Murrangurang Ralpatha Yenbena by Annalise Hanger
The artwork depicts the many areas across NSW that we have all joined from and emphasises the connection that we have to our ancestors. Including various native totems ensures the connection we each have to culture is highlighted.
The artworks title is Murrangurang Ralpatha Yenbena and in my peoples traditional language of Yorta Yorta means 'Always Among Ancestors'. They have allowed us today to leave our footprints on the lands we visit and take knowledge from the many people we encounter. They are our guiding forces and the reason we are in the place we are currently.
Each day we should thank them and I hope that within this artwork, many others can be reminded of the importance of our Aboriginal ancestors and sprits in the artistic space.
