Teaching dance to primary students - 4. Musical Theatre with Zac Jaffar

ZAC JAFFAR: Musical theatre is very important. You need to know what is going on. My name is Zac Jaffar. I was trained in musical theatre. When I teach a kid in musical theatre, I always want to find out what they enjoy in a class. When I start with my warm up first, and from there when I start to get to know them, find out what are the kids interests, actually, so I can change immediately what they really enjoy and what they can do.

Because today we're going to do a musical from 'Catch Me If You Can.' So this is a scene where flight attendants get it together and talk about, oh this is where I go. I met this person, I went to a nice restaurant. They join together in the dance into a big choreography routine. Some of them are a little bit new, because most of the musical is adult musical. So I make sure that they're having fun. Try to imagine that you're in a flight attendant's uniform, going to work and meeting everybody. Put character to it and smile. I think it-- I think works that way.

For the kids able come to the environment where the professional teachers coming in, they are very excited. So they want to get out of you-- to all the teachers-- just that you will just have fun. I think kids need guidance sometimes in terms of dancing because [? that's ?] [? what ?] [? you're ?] [? doing, ?] get involved. My passion is pass my experience. I like to give back. We actually organise all these kids who come to the workshop. It's a good way of letting them know art is fine, dancing is good. You can make career out of it.

ZAC JAFFAR: I start the workshop with a warm up first. So when I look at the warm up, then I can see their ability, what they can do.

Right? You know 90 degrees angle? So 90 degrees angle is from here to there. So this is not second. Look at the shape. The shape is unparallel. So open up a little bit more. More. A little bit more. That's it.

Make sure your knees, ladies, is not forward. Yeah? It's on the side.

So when you plié, you go down, yep. Show me this way. Stretch.

So I wanted to make sure you guys do a correct warm up, yeah? I don't want you guys to injure your knees or your ankle. All right, spread out.

This morning, we do choreography from the musical 'Catch Me If You Can.' So I'm going to teach you. We have a lot of different levels, so I want them to enjoy more. So some of them will feel a little bit uncomfortable, but I think they will enjoy the choreography.

So we're going to do a progression, yeah? Progressions means we're going to do line by line moving forward. So some of the steps that we're going to do in progressions are going to be in your choreography step. Yeah?

So we're going to do, first, six people in the first line. So spread out. So next line of six, make sure you stand behind them. Good. Next line of six, stand here.

If there is nobody here, you have to move somewhere else. Yeah? Good. So six-- next six, look around. You guys know about number six. Number one, number two, number three, there's nobody here you have to stand behind.

Musical theatre is very important. You need to know what is going on. Yeah? Sometimes we dance on music interpretations, because today we're going to do a musical from 'Catch Me If You Can.' You guys seen-- oh, you haven't seen it yet.

It's about flight attendants, a pilot, and a stewardess. There's a movie-- the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, but they made it into a musical. But we're going to do a scene where all the flight attendants prepare themselves to go flying.

So you guys are flight attendants. Because we only have one boy, you're going to be the pilot. Yeah?

So show me hands position first, looking parallel. So I want you guys to listen to me even though I lost my voice. Yeah? This position is for you to balance, yeah? It's not a straight line.

Bring your hands forward a little bit. That's it. Like this it's so easy for you to balance. Because if you're in a straight line, you're going to fall apart. So I want your hands forward a little bit, and rise up for me. Rise.

I want the feeling of rising up, almost falling forward. If you're going to fall forward, step forward for me. Go ahead, step forward. So what I'm trying to say is, like, this is not-- see, I'm pulling back? No.

When I say, going up, I want to fall forward, yeah? It's called travelling steps. So we're going to do passe first. So we're going to watch. Preparation, right leg back, everybody. Yeah? Hands in second.

Back leg is up. You kick, small kick. See how small is it? Bring it to the back, change. You don't move your front leg. You don't put your back heels down. Yeah?
