PATRICK LUCKY LARTEY: Hello, everyone. It's Lucky Lartey here. Today I'm going to be sharing with you some basic West African traditional dance.

I am from West Africa, from a country called Ghana. Before we start, we're going to - I'm going to share with you some basic knowledge about West African traditional dance. In West Africa, the dance and the drum are together. They're not separate. So understanding of the drum is the understanding of the dance.

Also, when we are have, when we dance, we usually have drums with us. Today, we're going to be using recorded music. And so we're going to put everything into counts. All the sequence will be in counts.

But usually, all the transitions will be played by a master drummer. And whenever we hear rim puh-tmp puh-tmp puh-tmp, it means change to the next piece. Same as 1, 2, 3, 4.

But today, we're going to be doing it with music. So as we go learning in the class, we're going to be learning a lot about these things. It's also important to understand that you need to warm up, stretch, ready to go, have enough water in you before we start.
