NEALE WHITTAKER: Hi, guys. My name's Neale Whittaker. In conjunction with Mr. Pete Evans, I am one of the hip hop choreographers for Schools Spectacular, State Dance and in conjunction with The Arts Unit.

Today's lesson is quite an exciting one. We've got an advanced intermediate routine to a style called a Light Feet. It's to a song called 'Can't Touch This' by MC Hammer. In 2019, Schools Spectacular, this was the last routine they performed right at the end of the set, so it was a pretty big vibe, bit of a party.

The whole point was to get the arena going, get everybody clapping with a classic song like 'Can't Touch This' to a new style of hip hop like Light Feet. So it's a lot of fun. It's a little bit intricate at times and a bit difficult, but we're going to take our time and get stuck straight into this.

So, guys, before we start this tutorial, just make sure that you're super warm because it's quite a lot of energy involved in the routine so going to make sure that you're nice and warm and ready to go and stretched out. Please refer to all the safe dance information that's required to make sure that you can get through this without any injuries or problems. Have plenty of space around you. Grab yourself a drink bottle, maybe a towel. Let's do this.

So I'm going to teach it to you facing the camera, facing you guys. I'll turn around and face the back, and then we'll give it a go the music. I'm going to teach you the whole phrase, so don't get too stressed if I'm throwing a lot of information at you. We should be OK. We'll take our time. If anything's confusing, just rewind, give it another go, and we should be OK.

Alright so I'm going to hold my hands like this. I'm going bom bom. I'm going to throw them across my body. This is a little bounce to the side. As I do that, my right leg is going to lift this way, and then I step across onto that right leg. Left supporting leg taking all the weight, so this is and one. So you got six, seven, eight, and you're going one-- like that. Your left leg, that you just left behind, is going to cut behind the right leg, and my arms are going to throw down across the body-- two, and I'm kicking that right leg.

So as I come across the body, I'm going and one, I throw the arms down, kick my right leg-- two-- and, like that. So what I want you to think about doing is, as you step onto your right leg-- have a little hop, a little bounce in your step. Boom, under that left leg, and then fall forward onto the right leg. The reason why we need to land on this right leg is because we're going to kick the soccer ball with the left leg and go-- kick-- ball-- change.

My arms are going-- one, so across the body, cutting down on the angle. Two-- and-- I go three and four, like that. As I kick my left leg as I'm kicking that soccer ball, I'm going to throw my right arm up at the same time. So you don't want to go same arms as legs, it'll feel a bit strange. You're going boom boom boom.

At the end of your kickball change, you want to go, kick, ball, change, and you place both elbows down. There in a parallel line of each other, and I've still got closed hands as a fist, and I'm in a bit of a plié. So go kick, ball, change. So I'm sitting into this position. This is back back, like that.

So going seven and eight and boom, like that. The rotation on my toes, I'm thinking weight in the balls of the feet. I'm going weight in the balls of the feet, and my heels are lifting up-- and I'm coming back down into the floor. Boom boom. And as a bounce bounce as I do it, my hands are going with the heels. So I'm going to the right, and then I'm bringing them back. There's a little twist in the body.

This goes-- and six and seven and eight. So hitting all these end counts. This is and five-- your right elbow-- with your right leg that should be in front. And five, you're going to hit them together, and you're going to hit your right hand to your right foot. Six-- you get to the side-- and-- left hand to left foot. Seven-- you throw both hands up in the air-- and then you're going to lock it in eight. Like that, boom boom.

Now with a lock in-- always has to be on and eight, and you can do it in a number of different ways. So you could go-- and five-- and six-- and seven-- and eight-- and eight and eight. All sorts of different ways as long as the feet are going, boom boom, just to keep it simple. And the arms are going out in, or criss cross, something like that.

So we gotta lock it in, and eight. All right, let's try it from the top. Six-- seven-- eight-- we go one-- two-- and three-- and four-- and five-- and six-- and seven-- and eight, just like that.

All right, let me try it to the back and then we'll go with the track. Ready? A five, six, seven, right leg, a one-- kick, two-- and three-- and four-- and five-- and six-- and seven-- and eight-- like that.

When you come down, boom boom, really slow it down because then we're going to throw it away to the right. One-- two-- like that. OK. So once you've gone-- boom boom, I want you to think, keep all your weight over both feet, and then allow your right leg-- to shoot out to the side. So let me show you again facing the front, facing the back, and then we'll just get started with the track. Let's rip the band-aid, do the first fast one and then we'll get from there. Ready?

A five, six, seven here we go, and a one, two, and three, and four and five, and six, and seven, and eight, one, like that. Arms are really loose when we throw it out. Just throw them away. Throw them up, throw them down, forward, whichever way. For me, I like to go-- and eight, and then throw them this way. Because it just reminds my legs which way to go-- as well.

Let's try it to the back. Five-- six-- seven-- can't touch this. Boom, boom, boom boom. Kah Kah. Boom boom. Kah Kah. Boom, boom. And one-- and we're out. Let's try with the music.

[music - MC Hammer, 'U Can't Touch This']

One, two, three, four, five, six--

(RAPPING) Hammer Time. Go with the flow, it is said-- that if you can't groove to this, then you probably are dead. So wave yo hands in the air. Bust a few moves, run your fingers through your hair.

Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

(RAPPING) Go with the flow-- it is said, that if you can't groove to this then you probably are dead. So wave-- yo hands in the air.

All right, I hope you're OK. It's a bit of a shock at first. When Pete and I had the rehearsals with all the featured dancers from last year and we taught them this routine, they were like, 'Whoa.' At first it was very shocking because it was so quick. Then it ended up being their favourite part of the routine. So much fun, there's heaps of energy, and you kind of just have to commit to it. Commit to all the really quick feet, all those things and eventually you'll fall in love with Light Feet as well I think.

From there, this is going, one-- we throw the arms down, two-- like that. My right leg is taking the weight. I'm throwing-- re-step my left leg down, two. I'm going to go, shimmy-- shimmy. And the three-- like that. I want to think-- crunching my shoulders towards my ears. Come down two-- and the three, up on your tippy toes. This goes, boom boom, like that. So I'm jumping my shoulders down down, and my heels are going, down down at the same time.

Think like a puppet, with string attached from the heels to the shoulders, boom boom, like that. So when I throw it away, one-- two-- and a three-- and four, like that. So we've gone. We've locked it in. And eight, we throw one, come down two, and a three, and four, like that.

The shimmy, gon gon gon, very fast. It can go right, left, up. Left, right, up, changed each time. Don't over think a shimmy. A shimmy is a shimmy #shimmy. So we go. Boom boom boom. Kah kah, and a three and four. My left leg, this is a very strange, very fast move. You want to go, and so you're going to send that foot-- out. I'm bouncing on my right supporting leg. I get it and, jump together, five-- like that, and six. And I clap. So she that again.

This is-- bounce into that supporting leg. Some people would jump straight away, and the weight isn't in the right place if you do that. So you need to go-- plié, as you release the leg. Jump together, and-- clap. And then try the other side-- and together-- and clap. Let's try to the back.

So I've gone five, six, seven, and eight we throw. One-- down-- two, shimmy up, bounce, bounce. My right leg takes all the weight. My left leg gets thrown away in this kind of awkward-- bent leg situation. My body twists as well. And five, jump feet together. Both feet at the same time, and six-- right leg throws away-- and seven-- both feet at the same time, and eight.

Something that's going to take you by surprise-- is once we've gone one, two, and a three, and four, straight away-- you have to-- flip that leg out. So you want to go-- one, two, and a three, and four, five, and six. You want to take a break? There are no breaks in this routine. This goes one-- two-- and a three-- and four-- and five, and six, and seven, and eight. From there, seven-- eight. So just another two jumps.

[clap] [clap]

We then go step step. So this is and one, like that. We do another clap. Two-- we're going to bounce three-- four-- like that. When you do this bounce, this is called a Down Groove. So going down-- down. My hand, very pedestrian, just kind of loose hand. Shoulder-- shoulder, like that. You can lean-- with it. You can keep the same shoulder each time, as long as your body's going down-- down as you do it. Then you're chill.

So this goes eight, we ball change. A one-- two-- bounce-- bounce. He's drawing a little C with your hands. You can also pop a leg. So you can go, a one-- two-- bounce-- bounce. You can switch the legs. You can do no legs, whatever you're feeling. That's so you can kind of play around with your creativity there.

This goes a one-- two-- three-- four. You take two steps back. A five-- six, and hold the hands together this time on this clap. This goes double time. You're doing the same pathway, shoulder to shoulder. But this goes instead of seven-- eight, you're going seven and eight. Boom, boom, boom. So you're doubling that rhythm.

So this goes a one-- two-- single, single. A five-- six-- seven-- and eight. Let me show you facing the back. So this is going seven, let's get from the lock, seven and eight. This goes one-- two-- and a three-- and four. A five, a six, a seven, a eight. A one-- two-- bounce, bounce, step, step. Six-- seven, and eight.

[music - MC Hammer, 'U Can't Touch This']

You're still facing you. Two, three, four.

(RAPPING) Stop. Hammer time. Go with the flow. It is said, that if you can't groove to this, then you probably are dead. So wave-- your hands in the air. Bust a few moves, run your fingers through your hair. So this is it, for a winner. Dance to this, and you're gonna get thinner. Move.

Alright ready? Facing back. Two, four, five, six--

(RAPPING) Stop. Hammer time. Go with the flow. It is said, that if you can't groove to this then you probably are dead. So wave-- your hands in the air. Bust a few moves, run your fingers through your hair. This is it, for a winner. Dance to this and, you're gonna get thinner. Move.

[gasping] Just one minute.

All right, we're right at the end. So I've gone-- a one, two, three, four, a five, six, seven, and eight. So I'm leaning into my left leg, and I'm tapping my hands to my left shoulder. I'm going step out on my right leg. So I've gone, seven and eight. My right leg steps out. My left hand comes up and over.

I go one-- and I place it behind-- my back. And I'm just starting a body roll. This goes one-- two-- three-- so three body rolls. One-- two-- three, I go clap. I'm going to throw this away, similar to the beginning. One, two, three, clap. You gotta drag this out, think like, ooohhhhh, super slow mo. One, two, three, clap. Re-step the left leg. Five, six, seven,-- and then we do a huge-- jump clap. With all the energy that you have left.

Let's try it from the back. We've gone-- seven and eight. Step out on our right leg. Drive this left hand down behind our bodies. One-- two-- three-- clap. Five-- six-- seven-- and then we're done.

[music - MC Hammer, 'U Can't Touch This']

All right. Here we go guys. Ready? And five, six, seven.

(RAPPING) Hammer time. Go with the flow. It is said, that if you can't groove to this, then you probably are dead. So wave-- yo hands in the air. Bust a few moves, run your fingers through your hair. This is it, for a winner. Dance to this, and you're gonna get thinner. Move, slide your rump. Just for a minute let's all do the bump. Bump bump bump. Yeah.

Alright here we go. Ready?

[music - MC Hammer, 'U Can't Touch This']

Here we go. Five, six, seven--

(RAPPING) Hammer time. Go with the flow. It is said, that if you can't groove to this, then you probably are dead. So wave-- yo hands in the air. Bust a few moves, run your fingers through your hair. This is it, for a winner. Dance to this, and gonna get thinner. Move, slide your rump. Just for a minute let's all do the bump. Bump bump bump. Yeah.

Guys, I hope you enjoyed the lesson. I certainly had a blast. Practise it as many times as you can. Change things up. Even if you learn one move, and it becomes a new favourite move, then that's a win. Make sure you keep the School Spec dream alive. We want to keep dancing. Stay super active. Keep an eye out for all the other awesome instructors and lessons. And I hope you had a great time. Good job guys. See you later.
