The history of Parcel From My Sister Kate

Parcel was brought out of looking at Women’s roles during WW1. (World War 1)
Students were asked to research women before and during the war years.

During that period, a story emerged of a young Lady from South Australia who had attempted to enlist three times. We created the story around her.

It was a much larger project than Jack and Tom, but it was entwined in Jack and Tom. The crew was larger, many more actors and extras, sets were more detailed and we filmed further from the school. We were fortunate enough to have our Patron, Bryan Brown offer to act in a scene (scene 5). The crew were ecstatic to be able to film such an icon of Australian Cinema. They will never forget it.

The project had its problems. Delays in getting a date to use some of the sites pushed back production. This affected the film’s ultimate release date. It arrived too close to Anzac Day that year.

The film has an original song and lyrics. Ultimately it was a worthwhile project that pushed us further to tell remarkable stories and gave our students a rich experience deeply embedded in 4C’s learning.

Parcel is now a Stage 5 history resource.
