Ask yourself that question. You have 3.5 mins. Can you shoot a Marvel-style blockbuster? (probably not)
Sometimes an idea might become a BITS (Best ideas to steal). They may not be a film but could be used in a scene.
There is no time to waste, so it is important to start fast. First, visualise a good establishment shot that will set the scene for your film.
Draw the audience into your film from the beginning. Once you have a strong start, here is a tip to help your story. Write the end or have a couple of endings but don’t make it obvious, give it a twist, and don't have a predictable ending.
This will keep your writing tight and not become what we call a ‘and then and then ... '
As you develop the story, think about what you want to reveal to your audience and what you want to hide. Build the tension.
Consider how the camera can lead the audience on the journey, actions before words. Remember, film is a visual medium. So yes, there needs to be dialogue, but show it, don’t say it most of the time.
Build the complication. A minor problem becomes bigger and then a huge problem that can reach a climax and then resolution.
Once your story is complete and you have revised and revised, engage a critical friend to critique the work. Notice I didn’t say, friend. An objective person to see if your story stacks up.
Remember this statement. If it doesn’t add to the story, it shouldn’t be in the film.
