Student production team

Students in the student production team work with the Schools Spectacular production team and industry professionals to assist with the bump in, bump out, management and coordination of all of the elements of the show. 

This category is open to students in Years 10 to 12 in NSW Public Schools.

Student requirements

There will be the opportunity to apply for specialist roles and generalist roles. You may be placed across multiple areas in the event such as the arena, backstage and SpecFest. Those successful in the specialist roles will work with our industry professionals in pre-production training and workshops. 

Students must be:

Specialist roles

Lighting Design

Industry professionals are responsible for the lighting design of Schools Spectacular 2024. The lighting designer conceptualises and plans the lighting design, coordinating with the artistic team to align with the show's theme, and ensuring the execution of the design during rehearsals and the live event. The Lighting Design Student Production Team role for Schools Spectacular 2024 involves observing the creation of a visually captivating and dynamic lighting scheme that complements and enhances the overall performance.

Lighting Operation (Arena and SpecFest)

Industry professionals are responsible for the bump in and operation of lighting at Schools Spectacular 2024 and SpecFest. Lighting Operation professionals are responsible for the hands-on implementation of the lighting design during rehearsals and the actual performance. The Lighting Operation Student Production Team role involves assisting with the bump in and setup of lighting and observing lighting operators as they control lighting equipment and coordinate with the Lighting Designer to achieve the desired visual effects and atmospheres.

Follow-spot Operation

Industry professionals call and operate follow spots at Schools Spectacular. As a Follow-spot Operator, individuals are tasked with controlling and directing the follow-spots during live performances. The Follow-spot Student Production Team role is a hands-on role that allows students to operate follow-spots during rehearsals and the show. This role demands precision and coordination to highlight specific performers on stage at key moments, adding dramatic emphasis to the overall show.

Graphic and Visual Design

Industry professionals are responsible for the Graphic and Visual Design of Schools Spectacular 2024. Their role focuses on creating visually appealing and cohesive graphic elements for the show. The Graphic and Visual Design Student Production Team role works with industry professionals to help with the creation of visual elements that align with the event's theme and effectively communicate the spectacle to the audience.

Styling and Costumes

Styling and Costume professionals play a crucial role in enhancing the visual aesthetics of the performance. This involves selecting, designing, and coordinating costumes for performers, ensuring they align with the overall theme. The Styling and Costumes Student Production Team role is a hands-on role that works closely with industry professionals during styling days, rehearsals and during the performance. There may be the opportunity to complete an Industry Immersion Day in the lead-up to Schools Spectacular to help prepare for the show.

Comms

The Comms role involves assisting industry professionals with managing communication systems during the event, ensuring seamless coordination between various teams backstage. Responsibilities include setting up and maintaining communication devices, managing frequencies, and facilitating clear and effective communication between key personnel. There may be the opportunity to complete an Industry Immersion Day in the lead-up to Schools Spectacular to help prepare for the show.

Vision and IMAG (AV)

Vision and IMAG specialists are responsible for overseeing the audiovisual aspects of the show, including live video feeds and image magnification (IMAG) for large screens. This role involves coordinating camera placements, directing video content, and ensuring a high-quality visual experience for the audience. The Vision and IMAG Student Production Team role is a hands-on role that assists industry professionals during bump-in and the show. There may be the opportunity to complete an Industry Immersion Day in the lead-up to Schools Spectacular to help prepare for the show.

Audio (Arena and SpecFest)

The Audio role encompasses the setup, and operation of the sound systems for Schools Spectacular 2024 and SpecFest. Audio professionals are responsible for ensuring clear and balanced sound and coordinating with performers and other technical teams to create an immersive and engaging auditory experience. The Audio Student Production Team role is a hands-on role where you can observe front-of-house audio, operate the sound desk at SpecFest, work in back-of-house audio assisting in the management of microphones and monitors or work as an audio grip on stage. There may be the opportunity to complete Industry Immersion Days in the lead-up to Schools Spectacular to help prepare for the show.

Camera Operation (Arena and SpecFest)

Camera Operators are responsible for capturing dynamic and compelling visuals during the live event. This role involves skillfully manoeuvring cameras to capture key moments in the arena and at SpecFest, working closely with the Vision and IMAG team, and ensuring a seamless integration of live video footage into the overall show. There may be the opportunity to complete an Industry Immersion Day in the lead-up to Schools Spectacular to help prepare for the show.

TV Production

TV Production professionals oversee the creation of a visually captivating broadcast of Schools Spectacular 2024. This involves directing camera operators, managing live feeds, and coordinating with various technical teams to produce a high-quality televised spectacle for both live and remote audiences. The TV Production Student Production Team role allows students to observe the creation of the broadcast of Schools Spectacular and to be hands-on with equipment during bump-in, the show, and bump-out.

SpecFestFloor Manager

As a SpecFest Floor Manager, your role will be to support the Staff Production Team in ensuring the smooth running of live crosses for the student co-hosts. In addition, you will be responsible for liaising with stakeholders to prepare interviews and captivating segments to be screened live during SpecFest. You will need to have excellent organizational and communication skills to be able to coordinate and communicate effectively with all stakeholders, including attendees, speakers, and vendors. Your role will be critical in ensuring that the Staff Production Team is supported, and the event runs smoothly.

Generalist roles

  • Assisting the stage management team.
  • Being a part of the team to deliver outstanding customer service to schools and the general public.
  • Opportunity to move props and staging on and off the performance floor.
  • Setting up and removing directional signage.
  • Supporting the holding room team with student cast movement.
  • Ushering.
  • Working with the audio team to gain an understanding of communication maintenance and distribution.
  • Working across the different production teams in all areas of event production in both SpecFest and the Schools Spectacular.

Key dates for the student production team

 Students in the student production team will be given a detailed schedule once they have been allocated to their department. Each department will have additional dates for training and preparation for production week.  Please find the key dates below:
