Combined Schools Signing Choir

How to participate

The Signing Choir is an inclusive opportunity open to public school students in Years 4 to 12 with some Auslan experience.

We encourage the inclusion of students with a disability and will work with the school to ensure any modifications or special provisions required are met.

Additional staff with Auslan skills will be on hand to support students who are Deaf, deaf or hard of hearing.

The Sydney Town Hall is fully accessible and has access to the stage for wheelchair users.

How to apply

Nominations due by Friday 7 June 2024.

Students are not required to audition; all students who apply will be accepted into the choir. 

Please note: students are required to have some Auslan experience.

School groups

Teachers may nominate a group of students from their school by submitting the School group nomination form. A teacher is required to attend with all school groups.

Individual students

Individual students may nominate by submitting the Individual student nomination form.

Attendance

Students will be required to attend the rehearsal on Friday 6 September (either in person or via an online Teams link) and attend the performance day on either Monday 23 September or Tuesday 24 September 2024. An email advising of performance date will be sent after applications close on Friday 7 June.

 

Cost

Participation fee of $37.00 per student.

Students are required to pay this fee to their school and fees with be debited from schools via interschool journal prior to the concert.

A rural and remote subsidy of 25% will be offered to all students attending from rural and remote schools as identified by the Department.

In the event of a COVID-19 related withdrawal from the festival performance, schools will be refunded 50% of the participation fee paid.

Costume

All students will receive a choir performance t-shirt as part of their involvement in the Signing Choir.  Students will also be required to wear black pants, black shoes and black socks.

Student behaviour

The Combined Schools Signing Choir is a Department of Education program and as such, just as at school, all students are expected to abide by the Department’s Behaviour Code for Students. Students are representing themselves, their families and their school whilst being a part of this choir.

Principal approval

Principal approval will be required for all students and staff who apply.  Please have a conversation with your school principal before submitting your application.  All principals will be contacted by the Choir team for confirmation of their approval following the close of applications. 

COVID-19

Primary Proms and the Combined Schools Signing Choir are committed to offering a COVID-safe event in 2024.

This program works in conjunction with the Department of Education and is supported by The Arts Unit to ensure that the operation of this program is contingent on the COVID-19 advice provided by the department in consultation with NSW Health.
