Combined High Schools

Each year, the NSW Department of Education selects a squad of senior high school students to compete in a series of representative debates against 3 private school organisations. This year, a squad of 15 students was selected to make up the Firsts, Seconds and Thirds representative teams.

The teams competed against the best non-government school debaters in 3 evening debates held on Wednesday 4 September, Monday 9 September and Wednesday 11 September. Congratulations to GPS who were victorious in this year's competition. 

To register for selection trials in 2025, please complete the CHS application. (Please note a maximum of 3 students from each school can be selected.)

Training is held online to allow students from across the state to take part. Students from regional areas are invited to trial provided they can commit to attending the in-person competition debates.

About the competition

• Students must be from Years 11 and 12.
• Students are nominated by coaches and adjudicators and selection trials take place at the end of Term 2.
• The selected students then participate in a series of coaching sessions.
• The Combined High Schools teams will face teams from the IGSA, GPS, and CAS debating organisations in a series of debates in Term 3.
• Firsts, Seconds and Thirds debates are held simultaneously in the evening at a host school. 
• Medallions and CHS ties are awarded to team members of the Firsts, Seconds, and Thirds. The NSW Representative Debating Cup is awarded to the champion representative team.

2024 CHS squad

Congratulations to our 2024 CHS squad who finished a hard-fought fourth place in this year's NSW Representative Debating Challenge.
