Georges River College Peakhurst Campus – The Power of the Bee

Georges River College Peakhurst Campus is located in Peakhurst in southern Sydney on traditional Bidjigal land.

Students at Georges River College Peakhurst Campus created this collaborative artwork to illustrate the important role that one small bee plays in the creation and sustainment of our natural environment and to recognise bees’ importance to the vast land of Australia.

The Power of the Bee – long text description

The Power of the Bee is a large drawing of a bee surrounded by flowers constructed from 28 separate panels in a 4 by 7 layout. The bee and the flowers are drawn in black pen then intricately coloured in a wide variety of soft pastel colours, reminiscent of a stained glass window.

The bee is shown spreading its wings with its head, thorax and abdomen placed in the centre. The head is coloured pink with black eyes and blue antennae. The thorax is comprised of concentric pink, green, orange, pink and blue layers. The abdomen is divided into straight- and jagged-edged stripes of green, pink, blue, orange, brown, green and red.

The legs have different coloured joints of blue, green, brown, orange, pink and yellow. The cells of the wings are individually coloured in bright contrasting colours, creating a rainbow-like effect.

The flowers surrounding the bee peep in from around the edge of the design. They are in various stages of bloom and include roses, hydrangeas and nasturtiums. Each part of each flower, including the petals, stamen, pistil, sepal and stem, is coloured differently from the next, creating a multicoloured sea of contrast.
