Lights, camera, action!

The Plan

There are 2 types of plans needed when you compose a film:

Technical planning

This planning is all about your equipment. There is nothing worse than meeting your friends at the location of the video and realising you left the memory cards at home! Questions to ask:

  • What equipment do you have access to?
  • Can you borrow any?
  • Are your batteries charged?
  • Do you have space on your memory cards?
  • What light are you using and how much control over that light do you have?
  • Have you got the cables for the mic?
  • Have you organised people to help?
  • Do they know where and when to meet you? (yes, people are part of your equipment)
Content planning

This type of planning is all about what goes on the screen:

  • How does the video start?
  • What type of camera angle is used?
  • What is in the foreground, middle ground and background?
  • In which direction do people move on and off the screen?
