Eligibility and selection

The Pulse Alive team are seeking talented dancers to be part of the Pulse Alive Dance Company (formerly known as principal dancers) for Pulse Alive 2024.

Nominations are open to students in Year 5 to Year 12 in 2025 who will be enrolled at a NSW public school.

Dancers selected via the audition process will be formed into various combinations for items throughout the show.

The Pulse Alive Dance Company will also re-form throughout the year to audition for participation in programs and events including Southern Stars and the Schools Spectacular. Students who audition successfully to become a member of the Pulse Alive Dance Company will be able to 'opt in' to these opportunities as they arise throughout the year.

Please note, this category is only open to individual performers. Students selected as principal dancers will not be able to participate with their school group in massed dance or First Nations dance ensemble.

Successful students will require the endorsement of their school principal to participate. Students are encouraged to discuss their nomination with a teacher at their school prior to submission.

Students participating in this category will be supervised by members of the Pulse Alive team. Schools will not be expected to provide a teacher for duty of care of these students. Students participating in the Pulse Alive Dance Company will not be able to participate in massed items with their school's massed dance group.

Priority within the audition and selection process will be given to students who are not participating as Featured Dancers in the 2024 Schools Spectacular.

Commitment

Students selected as members of the Pulse Alive Dance Company must be available for all rehearsal and performance dates. A medical certificate must be supplied for each missed rehearsal, otherwise students will forfeit their place in the company. No refunds of student resource fees will be given in this circumstance. Due to the limited number of rehearsals for the company, any rehearsal missed due to illness (with a medical certificate) will need to result in the student's role in the company being modified.

Students who are not available for all Pulse Alive Dance Company rehearsal and performance dates should consider participating in massed dance with their school group, or as an individual dancer (massed dance) if their school group is not participating.

Auditions

Auditions for the 2025 Pulse Alive Dance Company will be held on Saturday 7 September 2024 at The Arts Unit, Lewisham.

Students will need to be in attendance from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm. Any students who are unable to attend may be able to submit a video audition prior to the audition day, but this will need to be negotiated with the Pulse team following submission of the nomination form.

For the auditions, students do not need to prepare any choreography – they will be taught sequences on the day as part of the audition process.

Students auditioning will need to:

  • wear appropriate dance/activewear (no midriffs)
  • wear sneakers, as well as bringing a pair of jazz shoes (if they already own them – students do not need to purchase jazz shoes for the auditions)
  • have their hair tied back or styled out of their face
  • bring a water bottle, a sweat towel (optional), snacks and lunch – students will not be released to purchase lunch from local shops
  • declare any current injuries, if applicable, on arrival at the auditions.

Costume

The costume for all items will include multiple coloured Pulse Alive t-shirts, included within your student resource fee.

Members of the Pulse Alive Dance Company will be asked to supply various options of their own dancewear to go with their Pulse Alive t-shirts.

Resource fee

There will be a resource fee of $180 per student (GST inclusive).

The resource fee assists with the costs involved in the conductors, choreographers and tutors working with the students, supports a number of music clearance costs and includes a Pulse Alive t-shirt, which will be worn by all performers as their costume during the event.

Principal dancers will be required to pay the resource fee through The Arts Unit student payment portal on acceptance into the show.

Any 'opt-in' participation in events later in 2024 (such as Southern Stars and the Schools Spectacular) will incur an additional resource fee per event.
