Five Islands School – All About Me
Five Islands School is located in Booragul, Lake Macquarie, on traditional Awabakal land.
Four classes from Five Island School participated in this year’s project – Eaglehawk, Kookaburra, Lorikeet and Lyrebird – with students ranging from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Each class was given the 'This is Me' theme along with examples of different artworks for inspiration. They were free to create their artworks in their own way, allowing students of all abilities to participate. Each class used their own paint mediums to create the first part of the project, providing students with a sensory experience while also learning about colours and mixing them.
The unifying factor in each of the artworks is a photograph of each student taken at school – some while participating in a favourite activity, some candid and some posed. Staff also helped students create different sentences about themselves, outlining their talents, interests, loved ones and what makes them happy. The photographs and sentences were then layered over the top of each student’s painting.
What did the teachers and students have to say?
- ‘I loved doing this project with my class. It was such an excellent activity which creatively displays the interests, beliefs and creative abilities of the diverse range of students at our school.’ – Jo (teacher)
- ‘I enjoyed seeing the different ways each class worked with the stimulus for our project. They are each so different and personal. I particularly love the photographs used in each painting. They are a beautiful representation of each student's personality. Some students chose to pose, some were caught in a moment, but no 2 photos are the same!’ – Emma (teacher)
- ‘This was the best art ever! I like to use lots of different coloured paint. I love the photo of me. I am so happy with my art.’ – Wyatt (student, Year 11)
- ‘I made my artwork using watercolours. My favourite colours are green and yellow, and I mixed them together. My teacher helped me. I also drew a picture of myself ‘cause I wear glasses.’ – Amy (student, Year 7)
