Holroyd High School –
Cubist Self-Portraits

Holroyd High School is located in Greystanes, western Sydney, on the traditional land of the Darug people.

Holroyd High School students studied cubism and the works of Picasso. They engaged in creating assemblage artworks using MDF shapes and found objects, which were arranged and photographed, allowing them to create a 'planned composition' to work from each lesson.

Students experimented with the elements of art and design, including shape, colour, line, texture, balance and proportion, rendering each piece using a different painting or collage technique. Through a series of hands-on activities, students learned to integrate these elements of art into cohesive compositions, applying various painting techniques, collage methods and text to achieve rich textures and dynamic visual effects.

Three boys hold their large, brightly coloured cubist self-portraits.

What did the students have to say?

  • ‘My favourite part of making this was adding all the different effects over the top of the paint.’ – Dom (student)
  • ‘The best part was using all the cut-up pieces and assembling them to create something weird and wonderful that looked cubist.’ – Riley (student)
  • ‘I loved building the face out of wood and glueing all the pieces together like Picasso.’ – Declan (student)
